The best travel books, much like the best travel movies don’t rely on simple descriptions of places and things. You wont see trite statements like, “You’ll never believe the Taj Mahal. It just looks so freaking rad in real life.” No, an exceptional travel book let’s the locale and culture of a destination unfurl slowly, as part of a broader narrative. It allows you to make an emotional connection with the land where the story takes place. Instead of trying to force understanding down your throat you have the opportunity to learn to love the setting right along side the main character who will, almost by definition, be just as culturally ignorant as your are in the first chapter, thereby allowing the two of you to grow together. This is the key to greatness. Teaching a reader to love a culture based on it’s actions will leave a MUCH more lasting impact than showing them pretty pictures and describing how “cool” you trip was EVER will. Only then can the reader actually appreciate a culture they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience for themselves.
