Shower Transfer Benches for the Physically Challenged

The shower transfer bench is a type of shower seat that allows people with disabilities to more easily move, or be moved, from their wheelchair to a seat which allows them to take a shower.

The transfer bench is basically one long seat made of two parts. The user moves, or is moved by a caregiver, from their wheelchair to the part of the seat that is outside the shower or lip of the bathtub. The user can then slide, or be moved to the other part of the seat. This is the part that sits under the shower head.

Some transfer benches have a seat that slides, on rails, from one side of the bench to the other. Some models have a handle on the side of the bench that allows the handicapped person to more easily shift their weight from their wheelchair to the shower bench.

Typical features of shower transfer benches include drainage holes in the bench, adjustable aluminum legs, and non-slip seats. Optional features include a backrest that can be moved so that the physically challenged person can move to the shower bench from the right or left side.

Shower transfer benches can also be used for the bathtub as the legs can fit over the lip of the tub.
